What's it like to be a Maintenance Electrician?
Maintenance Electricians carry out preventive maintenance tasks, including general maintenance and repairs, for electrical systems. They may use testing devices to diagnose problems with wiring or fixtures, and replace or repair elements as required.
Tasks and duties
- Diagnose faulty or malfunctioning systems using tools and testing equipment to locate the cause of a problem.
- Install electrical wiring, equipment, applications or fixtures.
- Test all assemblies, installations or repairs on electrical or electronic wiring.
How to become a Maintenance Electrician
To become a Maintenance Electrician you’re required to complete a traineeship or apprenticeship, then apply for an electrical licence to work unsupervised.
- 1.Find and apply for an electrical apprenticeship. An Apprenticeship Network or Group Training Organisation in your area can help you find a host employer and start your apprenticeship.
- 2.An apprenticeship is usually four years, and will include some structured training through a registered training organisation to complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30811).
- 3.Apply for an Electrician’s Licence. As licensing and registration requirements may vary between states, you should check with the licensing body in your state.
