Mechanical Design Engineers create specifications and designs for machines using computer-aided design (CAD) software. A Mechanical Design Engineer may work on machines such as engines, appliances, construction equipment or tools. Common responsibilities include testing prototypes, troubleshooting design issues and collaborating with other Engineers to refine solutions. This career is often found in industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing and consumer products.
Tasks and duties
- Creating mechanical designs using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
- Developing and testing prototypes to evaluate the functionality and performance of designs.
- Conducting engineering analysis to ensure designs meet specifications and standards.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including Engineers, Project Managers and manufacturing staff.
- Troubleshooting design issues during the development and production stages.
- Preparing technical documentation to support design projects.
