What's it like to be a Pilates Instructor?
Pilates Instructors train people in specialised exercises and the use of apparatus that aim to reduce stiffness and soreness, strengthen muscles and create more mobility in the body.
Tasks and duties
- Teaching different exercises and techniques to individuals or classes.
- Training participants on how to use various apparatus, such as mats, reformers and trapeze tables.
- Developing tailored classes to meet the health needs of clients.
- Scheduling and promoting classes if required.
How to become a Pilates Instructor
Employers usually seek Pilates Instructors with a relevant qualification. There are multiple Pilates qualifications available to cater for different career goals.
- While not essential, consider completing a Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30321) to learn the basic skills required to become an exercise instructor.
- Complete a relevant qualification that matches your career goals. A Matwork Certificate is an entry-level course, while a Certificate IV in Pilates Matwork and Reformer (10721NAT) or Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction (10838NAT) may equip you with a broader range of skills.
- To improve your employability, consider getting a Pilates certification through the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA). The PMA regulates the practice of Pilates Teachers in Australia.
- Get liability insurance. This will protect you and your clients in the event of injury.
