What's it like to be a Security Manager?
Security Managers are employed in various settings, ranging from businesses and warehouses to residential developments. They’re responsible for organising and overseeing all security operations. Security Managers also create security strategies, implement security procedures and supervise security officers and guards.Tasks and duties
- Developing and implementing security policies, protocols and procedures to maintain security standards.
- Controlling budgets and monitoring expenses.
- Recruiting, training and supervising security officers and guards.
- Reviewing reports on incidents and breaches.
- Liaising with department managers to determine security needs.
- Gathering security intelligence and implementing preventative measures.
- Coordinating responses to emergencies and alarms, as well as compiling incident reports.
- Preparing surveillance equipment maintenance schedules and facilitating repairs.
- Ensuring compliance with company policies and security industry regulations.
How to become a Security Manager
To become a Security Manager, you normally require a combination of education and experience. Most employers require a relevant VET qualification and computer skills. Licensing requirements vary between states and territories.
- 1.Complete a relevant VET qualification. Many employers require a Certificate II in Security Operations (CPP20218) and/or Certificate IV in Security Management (CPP40719).
- 2.Ensure you have the right checks and licences as required by employers in your state or territory. This can include a Security Licence, driver’s licence, Working with Children Check, Police Check and First Aid Certificate.
- 3.Gain experience working as a Security Guard. During this time, it’s beneficial to build knowledge of surveillance equipment, emergency systems, Microsoft Office and occupational health and safety requirements.
- 4.Consider completing a degree to progress your career. With a business degree, you can work towards starting your own security management business.
