What's it like to be a Technical Officer?
Technical Officers provide maintenance, support and advice to employees about an organisation’s systems and facilities. Technical Officers may be employed within different industries such as construction, education, engineering and information technology.
Tasks and duties
- Providing high-level technical support and advice for employees, customers or individuals in need of assistance.
- Designing, developing and maintaining equipment to ensure effective and safe use.
- Providing timely and accurate costing, purchasing and inventory of materials and associated equipment
- Servicing and cleaning equipment and infrastructure.
How to become a Technical Officer
Depending on the industry in which you work, you may need formal qualifications to be employed as a Technical Officer. This may be a VET certification, or it may be a degree-level qualification
- 1.Decide which industry you want to work in. There are a range of different technical officer positions such as Agricultural Technical Officers, Forest Technical Officers, Telecommunications Technical Officers and Laboratory Technical Officers.
- 2.Investigate what qualifications or experience you need according to the sector. For example, to work as a Medical Technical Officer you may need a Diploma of Laboratory Technology (MSL50118), and within the electrical industry you’ll need an unrestricted electrical licence
