What's it like to be a Theatre Technician?
Theatre Technicians are an integral part of the perioperative team, working closely with doctors and nurses in operating theatres to care for patients before, during and after operations. They ensure a patient's safety and comfort while they are in the operating theatre and may set up equipment used during surgery.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing operating theatres and surgical equipment for surgeries.
- Assisting the surgical and anaesthetic teams during surgeries.
- Maintaining operating theatre equipment and ensuring a clean and safe environment for hospital staff and patients within operating theatres.
- Maintaining operating theatre supplies.
- Transporting patients to and from operating theatres.
- Preparing patients for surgery and assisting them into the correct position for surgery.
- Giving support to patients while they are in the recovery room.

To become a Theatre Technician, you usually need to complete a VET qualification in health services assistance. You may be able complete this course as part of a traineeship. Entry requirements may vary, but employers generally require the completion of Year 10.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (HLT33115) or a Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support (HLT47515).
- 2.In order to apply for jobs, you may be required to get a national Police Check and a Working with Children Check. You will also need the required immunisations for health care workers.
