What's it like to be a Tyre Fitter?
Tyre Fitters are responsible for fitting, fixing, removing or replacing tyres on vehicles such as cars and trucks. Tyre Fitters tend to be employed by automotive or tyre centres and wheel alignment specialists. This role is suited to individuals who enjoy practical and hands-on work, as well as people who have an interest in motor vehicles.
Tasks and duties
- Removing existing tyres and fitting replacements by using air-driven equipment.
- Inspecting, diagnosing and assessing tyre damage and wear to determine what action needs to be taken.
- Selecting the correct tyres, tubes, rims and accessories before balancing wheels and tyres.
How to become a Tyre Fitter
You can work as a Tyre Fitter without formal qualifications as some on-the-job training will usually be provided, however an apprenticeship or traineeship is an excellent way to gain practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
- 1.Undertake a qualification in tyre fittings, such as a Certificate II in Automotive Tyre Servicing Technology (AUR21916).
- 2.Most Tyre Fitters will need to have a current driver’s licence and may need to take a pre-employment medical check.
- 3.Tyre Fitters who wish to further their career can become wheel aligners (identifying faults in vehicle stability) or may prefer to undertake further study and training and become a mechanic.
