What's it like to be an Agile Business Analyst?

Agile Business Analysts are Business Analysts that run Agile methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban and XP. These methodologies are rooted in adaptive planning, early delivery and continuous improvement, all with a view to being able to respond to change quickly and easily. Agile Business Analysts are specialists in putting these methodologies into practice.

Tasks and duties

  • Focus on understanding problems and being the domain expert so that you can answer questions from the development team swiftly and decisively.
  • Ensure the requirements meet the current business needs.
  • Deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a preference to the shorter timescale.

How to become an Agile Business Analyst

There is no single pathway to becoming an Agile Business Analyst, but there are a range of skills and experience you’ll need to have in order to be considered for the role, including knowledge of Agile methodologies.
  1. Explore formal training options. There are many different courses depending on your interests and skills. Some options may include a Bachelor of Computer Science or a Bachelor of Information Technology.
  2. Look for an entry-level job where you can learn the ins and outs of software design from experienced professionals. While you’re studying it’s a good idea to develop a portfolio to demonstrate your skills to prospective employees.
  3. Become certified in Agile methodologies. There are different certificate options, such as the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (ACP).
