What's it like to be a Compliance Officer?
A Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring a company’s practices are compliant with relevant laws, regulations and licensing requirements. They advise key stakeholders on a range of matters including compliance, auditing, health and safety, financial risk and legislation. Compliance Officers typically have advanced administrative skills and an eye for detail. They often work in regulated industries like health care, financial services, mining and logistics.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting internal reviews and audits to ensure compliance procedures are followed.
- Coordinating and attending meetings with directors and stakeholders.
- Coordinating and conducting internal risk assessments and identifying, assessing and managing risks.
- Coordinating and conducting internal investigations into compliance issues.
- Ensuring company activities, products, policies and documentation are compliant with company, state and federal regulations.
- Reporting to board and management on matters of risk, compliance and legislation.
- Ensuring record management systems are kept up to date.
How to become a Compliance Officer
Although qualifications are not essential, employers may prefer candidates with formal qualifications in compliance or a bachelor degree in a relevant field.
- 1.Complete a relevant qualification. This could be a Certificate IV in Compliance and Risk Management (10131NAT), or a Diploma of Quality Auditing (BSB51615).
- 2.Explore opportunities to further your career and skills by undertaking a bachelor degree majoring in a relevant field such as law, finance or economics.
