What's it like to be a Pastry Chef?
Pastry Chefs are skilled in the art of preparing and making pastries and baked goods, which may include desserts, bread, cakes and viennoiseries. They are required to have knowledge of various pastry techniques, an eye for detail, and creativity.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing and shaping dough.
- Performing techniques such as lamination.
- Creating and testing new recipes.
- Decorating baked goods.
- Ordering ingredients, stock control and organising a pastry kitchen or station.
- Maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
How to become a Pastry Chef
There are no required qualifications to become a Pastry Chef, but it’s common for Pastry Chefs to complete an apprenticeship and gain a vocational qualification such as a Certificate III in Patisserie (SIT31016).
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Patisserie (SIT31016) and look for a commercial kitchen, restaurant, hotel or café where you’d like to complete your apprenticeship.
- 2.Develop an understanding the scientific principles behind baking, different preparation techniques and food safety.
- 3.Gain experience in the industry and pursue opportunities to work as a Head Pastry Chef.
