What's it like to be a Theatre Nurse?

Theatre Nurses (also referred to as Perioperative Nurses) are Registered Nurses who are part of a perioperative surgical team.

Tasks and duties

  • Provide nursing care before, during and after patients undergo surgery or a non-surgical procedure.
  • Assess patient and ensure critical medical history items are communicated to the surgical team.
  • Provide pre- and post-surgery education to patients and their families, ensuring they are cognisant of what is going to happen and are prepared for the procedure.
Theatre Nurses usually provide care in four areas of care: preoperative (pre-assessment), anaesthetics, surgical phase and recovery phase.
Theatre Nurses often have a specific area of responsibility, such as working in the holding bay, supporting the anaesthetist, acting as a scrub nurse or being responsible post-recovery. Some Theatre Nurses may have to work in more than one of these roles during a particular procedure.

How to become a Theatre Nurse

To work as a Theatre Nurse you will need to be a Registered Nurse. The most common way to become a registered nurse is to complete a Bachelor of Nursing degree.
  1. Ensure you are a Registered Nurse. Then undertake a qualification in theatre nursing, such as a Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing, or a Master of Nursing.
  2. Ensure that you are registered an appropriate board (such as the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia) and meet their registration standards to be able to practice professionally.
  3. Theatre nurses who want to further their careers can look to become a director of nursing or an executive director of nursing.
