What’s it like working at National Gallery of Victoria?

    AI summary of recent reviews

The National Gallery of Victoria offers employees the opportunity to work in a creative environment with access to ambitious exhibitions and beautiful artworks. Staff particularly value working alongside committed colleagues who are passionate about the gallery's role in the community, and appreciate the location and flexible working arrangements.

However, there are areas for improvement, including the need for better communication between departments and more transparent career progression opportunities within the hierarchical structure. Some employees note that management practices could be enhanced, particularly around staff development and support. There are also practical challenges around irregular working hours and facilities that need updating.

Behind the scenes at the NGV there is a deeply problematic workplace culture that prioritises optics over staff wellbeing.
The good thingsWorking at the NGV gives you access to a high-profile institution with ambitious exhibitions.
The challengesDespite its public image, the internal culture is highly hierarchical and driven by informal power structures. In my experience, inappropriate behaviour was not only tolerated but, at times, protected through silence and non-disclosure agreements. Career progression was often influenced by personal affiliations rather than merit. Staff are given personal and inappropriate ‘career advice’ from senior management. Raising concerns about this led to exclusion from meetings, withholding of critical information, and public undermining. When issues were raised with HR, the response leaned toward risk minimisation rather than meaningful support, with formal action discouraged due to likely duration, mental health impact, and low chance of resolution.

Overall a bad working environment that I would not recommend to anyone
The good thingsBeing able to roam through gallery spaces and exhibitions were nice perks.
The challengesThe culture was unsupportive and counterproductive. Employee facilities and resources were severely outdated. Senior management lacked clear leadership direction or training and only focused on presenting a polished image to potential donors and stakeholders, rather than addressing staff challenges.

The good thingsTher are some good people
The challengesToxic, only favouritism gets you promoted, experience accounts for nothing. Management as so busy one uping one another to look good they've forgotten that their staff are humans, not robots.
