A solid place to work if you value meaningful work, a supportive team, and genuine work-life balance
The good thingsLess than six months in, and so far so good. The mission is genuinely interesting; you’re contributing to aviation safety across Australia, which gives the work real weight. The team culture is collaborative, pay is competitive, flexible working is actually supported, and job security is real. It’s a stable environment where you can focus on doing good work without burning out.
The challengesLike most government organisations, decision-making can be slow. Multiple layers of approval are often needed, and there’s not always full transparency around where things are at. If you’re coming from agency or private sector, this will be an adjustment. It’s pretty standard for the sector, but worth knowing going in.

Project Manager and Senior Engineering Roles

A really interesting field of work - let down by the organisation and structures.
The good thingsThe field of Air Traffic is very interesting!! - from Technology, Aircraft and Operational viewpoints.
The challengesThe workplace can be good or toxic, it varies. But Airservices HR structure floored for such an important public transport and safety organisation. They have 3 separate Enterprise agreements, that are completely different. If you're a traffic controller or fire fighter you get higher super, higher salaries, early retirements packages, more increments of pay, higher travel allowances. If you're a Technical, Trade, Engineer you're treated as second class employees and you get less super and much lower pay with higher workloads and expectations for long hours of (unpaid) overtime of course. Explains why hardly any new Engineering or Technology employees join Air Services. Those that do ....... be prepared to get a big workload due to constant shortage of staff with many senior staff having little of no management or relevant technical experience. The difference in treating 1/3 of employees badly is toxic and poor. A good managerment team would rectify and give equality to all.

Executives who lack courage, skill, and accountability let down capable people doing critical work.
The good thingsThe colleagues. Through shared challenges, we formed genuine friendships and a strong sense of camaraderie. I also gained deep respect for the people who actually keep aviation running, the ARFFS crews and air traffic controllers whose competence and professionalism ensure planes get off the ground safely every day.
The challengesLeadership was fundamentally broken. Rather than setting strategic direction, the C-suite resorted to micromanagement and intimidation. Speaking up was career-limiting, with swift exits for those who raised concerns. The C-level showed little capability in strategic decision-making or effective leadership. The waste of public money was staggering. Airservices commissioned multiple independent culture reviews. Each found the same thing: culture was dire and getting worse, and leadership was the cause. Staff were told solutions were coming. Instead, we'd receive another survey. Nothing changed. In two years, my programme cycled through nine project managers, four programme managers (one of whom lasted three days), and five change managers.

A disappointing culture that rewards politics over integrity.
The good thingsThe work itself has national significance, and many employees genuinely care about doing the right thing for aviation safety. Unfortunately, the culture doesn’t always support that intent.
The challengesAirservices needs to address the culture of self-interest and defensiveness that prevents honest dialogue. Leadership development should focus on integrity, humility, and genuine collaboration rather than political positioning. The organisation could improve by realigning leadership behaviour with its stated values. Accountability should be modelled from the top down, with systems that reward openness and ethical decision-making instead of self-promotion.

One of the worst working environment
    The good thingsProjects were interesting
The challengesManagement was appalling: lack of support and empowerment need to be corrected, micromanagement eliminated, prioritization of safety to be on the same level as project delivery. Most importantly if you are a project manager you need to manage people as part of the project. Competence in some areas is lacking, people have obviously a solid background in air traffic control, but need to acknowledge they are not expert of everything (a good controller is not necessarily a good engineer or manager).

An immensely rewarding and truly unforgettable experience.
The good thingsI feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of this organisation for as long as I was. While balancing a demanding caring role, I was met with compassion and understanding enabling me to work full time effectively. Compared to other organisations, this was by far the best place I’ve ever worked.
The challengesI served as a liaison between the business intelligence teams and operational staff, bridging gaps to ensure effective communication. One challenge was the presence of intellectual elitism, which at times hindered operational staff's access to critical information necessary for their work.

    A job, not a career.
The good thingsFlexibility and not overly hard work
The challengesThe workplace is toxic, but Airservices PR is worse... They have 3 separate Enterprise agreements, and they differ a lot. If you're a traffic controller or fire fighter you get more super, better pay, more increasement of pay, travel allowances. If you're a Technical, Trade, Engineer you're on corporate EA and you get less super and pay. Explains why hardly any new employees and be prepared to get a big workload due to constant shortage of staff. The Difference of how they treat 1/3 of employees is very toxic and bad, you think they would fix it and give equal to all employees. Instead - they milk it.

A toxic and lazy culture of zero accountability.
The good thingsTime off is great, gym available, sleeping on night shift, watching TV etc on down time, if you get injured in or outside the job you still get paid.
The challengesPoor management and leadership, lack of appropriate resources, poor culture with no accountability, lazy employee's thrive whilst the hard workers go unrecognised, the organisation has very little experience at real incidents which impacts negatively, senior management seriously out of touch.

A place of last resort due toxic culture and lack of leadership.
The good thingsSalary and leave entitlements
The challengesToxic culture from the very top. Unqualified technical staff making engineering decisions. Lack of leadership with the good ones leaving. Constant change a symptom of lack of direction and vision from the top.

The level of importance it places on the views of its staff can be demonstrated by the exit interview, an online survey consisting of five multiple choice questions taking 90 seconds to complete. Disgraceful!!!!
The good thingsThe money and the ability to work remotely
The challengesThe organisation is so siloed it's not funny. Most management are operating a couple of levels beyond their capabilities and for the most part are risk adverse and are responsible for a blaming culture.

Very disappointing and will never want to work here again
The good thingsLearning the technicalities of a new industry if one hasn't worked in aviation, which is interesting
The challengesOne is micromanaged (I was via my direct PM and was never commended on things I did right but rather told I spend time reading emails! One is not allowed to become familiar with project i.e. reading documentation etc), work/life balances are not respected although widely spoken about only to tick boxes, managers have NO managerial skills(they seem to be working in their own bubble), very little communication or interpersonal skills, team work is hit and miss depends where you're based. I found me being the only one in this state that there is no system to introduce one to the processes hands-on. Induction is an overload of technical information. Organisation is hit and miss.

Nice company to work for if you value work flexibility more than money and career advancement.
The good thingsNice workmates and team leader. No micromanaging and work is very flexible. Good company to work as a technical officer for someone who is introverted and doesn't like interacting with many people.
The challengesYou stay in the same entry level position until you retire. No promotions even you become an expert in your line of work. You're given more responsibilities and work as you grow in expertise but your pay level stays the same. Management don't care about your advancement.

For peace of mind DO NOT join Airservices Australia as service desk operator, waiting to get out.

    Gaslighting galore
The good thingsSome work flexibility if you have children.
The challengesGaslighting happens all the time and there are no safe reporting mechanisms in place. Talking to senior management isn’t even an option either with leaders being chosen not by their capabilities to lead and inspire but only based on their work knowledge. Standing up for yourself isn’t a safe option.

    Mar 2020
9 to 10 years in the role, current employee
Interesting work and good conditions but bad management and bureaucracy can hinder your performance and lower morale.
The good thingsAbove average pay, Mon-Fri with the occasional weekend or night OT. Suits people who like to see the impact of their work in the community. Benefits are good - plenty of opportunity for the right type of person. The people you work alongside are the main thing that keep you coming to work.
The challengesManagement often go unchecked and often push KPIs and often interpret the rules unfairly. People on the front lines often work well together and collaborate more. A lot of knowledge to acquire before you’re useful. There is a lot of paperwork and regulatory red tape. Technological change has been slow to implement but seems to be accelerating in the organisation.
