I learnt what a poorly run team is because of my time at Arup. I know signs of incompetence and what to avoid. I'm grateful for the experience as it has set me up to know what is good for me for the rest of my career.
The good thingsBecause of the lack of capable team members I was able gain skills quickly, by teaching myself and subsequently became a company expert in these areas.
The challengesTerrible manager, punished me for working over time, but demanded it. No competent employees were available to review my work and due to my inexperience, what we submitted to the client was utter garbage. Given impossible deadlines. The pay was not good either.

They have great PR. That's all.
The good thingsGood office design and PR.
The challengesVery judgmental, zero collaboration and lack of relevant projects where you're asked to do a LOT of boring business development/ funding applications even in senior roles.

The company has lost its way the past few years. Constant team restructuring has resulted in a break down of the culture and values that Arup once held dear. Poor decisions have been made repeatedly around staff retention, meaning a loss of key skills and good people. A regular imbalance within teams of people either being too busy and overworked, or completely underutilized with nothing to do.
The good thingsPeople are often willing to share information openly and go out of their way to help. The systems are fairly well developed. Leave policies and entitlements are generous - the ability to purchase leave and an additional day off for birthday leave.
The challengesThe company has changed dramatically over the past few years and values appear to have changed from people focused to purely business/money focused. Not being able to win meaningful work in the past few years has increased pressure on staff. Lack of profit share meaning staff are sometimes underpaid

Sinking ship. Culture has changed drastically over the years and is no longer the company it portrays to be.
The good thingsWFH and friendly / supportive team mates
The challengesExtremely low salary, with no or very little profit share paid out to staff who were promised this as part of their package. Pigeonholed doing the same work, with very little chance of progression. Difficulty retaining good staff or winning any meaningful work.

Significantly below the standard I expected of Arup.
The good thingsOffice Fitout is really good.
The challengesPoor leadership and no work pipeline. I saw graduates being thrown into deep end feeling constantly overwhelmed with no support. This led to people getting sick more often.

Inspirational company, but just got too hard
The good thingsFlat structure and open doors. Some truly interesting, unapologetically unique and inspiring people.
The challengesFeels like an identity crisis in this office. High organisational aspirations that seem sometimes end up in the realm of lackluster in practice, often due to individual childish and egotistical behaviors and silos. Shockingly outdated or poorly set up systems made doing good delivery work in reasonable hours virtually impossible.

Ok experience, could have been much better
The good thingsLocation, lots of food available - from meetings and lunch time presentations, work was ok
The challengesTreats contractors terribly, say they have work life balance but they don't expect people to work ridiculous hours, some sections and people are unfriendly, can be clicky, high pressure without support from management, communication is terrible, very nitpicky over the smallest thing.

A place of constant change allowing you to grow.
The good thingsArup is a purpose driven firm where their values underpin behaviours and quality work.
The challengesThe company is held in trust, there are no shareholders but everyone owns Arup, so it can be challenging when everyone has an opinion.

If you're not an engineer this will only ever be a job, not a career.
The good thingsStunning office. An interesting mix of people. You'll hear amazing stories about some of the world's most challenging projects.
The challengesCut-throat team members. Long hours. Antiquated software and hardware. BD team are concerned with quantity, not the quality, of their bids.
