What’s it like working at Ballarat Clarendon College?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Ballarat Clarendon College offers a unique educational environment where supportive collaboration between staff members is encouraged, and teachers particularly value working with engaged students. The school provides significant professional development opportunities, with many teachers noting substantial growth in their teaching practice and appreciation for the high standards maintained throughout the school.

However, the school's commitment to excellence comes with certain challenges. The workload can be demanding with expectations for additional hours, and some staff members find the management structure quite detailed in its oversight. There are also some concerns about the compensation structure, particularly regarding payment for non-teaching duties such as preparation and correction time.

Regretful career change...did not live up to expectations of a prestigious private school
The good thingsFriendly colleagues, students and (some) teachers! Negotiable on flexible work Will accommodate unscheduled or short-notice appointments Student outcome focused (understandably!)
The challengesManagement - Inconsistent, controlling, disrespectful, disorganised leadership; lack of communication, transparency, standard procedures, accountability; no follow through on commitments; relentless micromanagement; very limited promotion opportunity; self-advocacy is not well-received; generic job description that covers all administrative staff regardless of role location or complexity of tasks; decisions and opportunities were often influenced by managers personal relationships rather than team performance; staff are not supported to grow, thrive or succeed as in previous reviews if you advocate for yourself Once you settle into the role, it becomes clear that there’s a strong hierarchy — and those without personal connections to management aren’t treated with the same level of respect or fairness, creating an unprofessional and unhealthy culture for most You may enjoy a support role if you like being moved around constantly and not having a clear, meaningful day-to-day to do list

I have learned more in my time at Clarendon than all my previous years of teaching experience combined. I am honoured to wear the Clarendon Badge around my neck. I am grateful for every day I work here.
The good thingsBallarat Clarendon College is a truly unique school. It hasn't earned it's outstanding reputation through deception or process of elimination. It truly strives to develop and obtain the very best out of every student and teacher. In every way a thoroughly authentic school.
The challengesWork demands can be intense, but you learn to expect that from this school. I found that coming here I couldn't rest on the successes of my past teaching. I was genuinely encouraged to constantly learn apply best practise teaching methodologies to every part of my teaching. Don't come to this school if you are expecting to coast, you won't be able to. This school will stretch to to accomplish things you never thought possible.
