My role allows me to interact with customers while helping the store operate smoothly
The good thingsThe people are quite nice, and the job itself is quite easy. The pay is good too
The challengesI found it difficult making connections and sometimes would feel targeted by management. It was also sometimes difficult helping customers get what they want as my training was limited and the store is quite big and stock moves around often

Proud to deliver great value and friendly service every day.
The good thingsWorking at Best&Less Busselton has been a really rewarding experience. I’ve genuinely enjoyed being part of a friendly, supportive team where everyone looks out for each other and communicates well. The store has a positive atmosphere, and it’s easy to feel proud of the work we do when customers leave happy. I’ve also enjoyed the variety in my day - from helping customers find what they need, to keeping the store looking great, to learning new tasks on the floor. It’s the kind of workplace where you’re encouraged to grow your skills and take initiative, which has helped me feel more confident and capable. One of the best parts has been building relationships with regular customers. It’s nice to be recognised, have a quick chat, and know that the service we provide really makes a difference. Overall, it’s been a place where I’ve felt valued, supported, and able to enjoy my work.
The challengesCommunication around changes - whether it’s new promotions, stock updates, or shifts in store layout. Sometimes information comes through at the last minute, which can make it harder to prepare properly or deliver the best customer experience.

Great people. I wish my contract was extended.
The good thingsGreat people, great location. Everyone in the office is really nice and welcoming. Regular social events to keep the support office team connected. Opportunities for development as the company grows. B&L managers are all incredibly knowledgeable and happy to share their knowledge even when busy. The Head of HR is always available to support and offer advice with an open door policy.
The challengesMore needs to be done to include introverts and neurodivergents without forcing them to be extraverted (e.g., a book club could be run through Teams chat as well as have an option for an in-person group). More flexibility for WFH would be appreciated.

Poor workplace, poor direction, poor management, poor experience
The good thingsMade some great friends, the 1 hour lunch break plus a 20 min tea break, seeing new stock come into the store
The challengesSenior management, store managers (being able to keep a manager for more than a few months), the way in which staff are spoken to, the unrealistic expectations from higher management, low staff rostering, senior staff and merchandising team constantly changing their minds so you're always double handling, made to feel guilty when sick

2 years I will never get back, toxic work environment, poor management, avoid working hereThe workplace operated under constant high pressure, with little regard for employee work–life balance or wellbeing. Upper management frequently displayed aggressive and inconsistent behaviour. I can see why all the previous managers have left. I experienced negative conduct towards me that led to my dismissal. The environment felt hostile and coercive, with staff routinely pushed to work beyond rostered hours without sufficient support, tools, or training. I was misled about the level of support and I regret my time working here, but glad it was only 2 years of my life

I was able to work by myself most of the time especially when being at the counter.
The good thingsThe Customers are sweet and considerate and really understand when you unfortunately don't have the product.
The challengesThe people that I worked with were hard to work with as they were from school and i knew most of them from events so they knew personal things about me that wasn't really helpful.

The good thingsMost people are easy to work with and even make working there fun. Customers were lovely.
The challengesThefts were fairly common in the area so managers and supervisors were tense.

The challengesThe challenges were learning how to respectfully communicate and serve customers, dealing with customers who are disrespectful towards you, being confident in the workplace environment, being efficient in completing tasks.

    Amazing
The good thingsThe overall experience within the store was amazing. many opportunities for development and career progression are on offer and management was very supportive in helping me to progress through more advanced roles within the store. Unfortunately the store was closed down, however we were all given the chance to relocate to other stores and no staff were made redundant. One of the best companies to work at and thoroughly enjoy being there. Positive work culture.
The challengesI did not find any challenges

The good thingsI enjoyed having equal opportunities and learning new skills each day which will benefit me for future job applications and roles.
The challengesThe biggest challenge had to be dealing with unhappy customers the right way and ensuring that their needs are met so they are satisfied.

The good thingsGood salary Good incentives Managers conferences

Good for a casual or part time retail job if you don't need a lot of hours.
The good thingsThere is always something to do, lots of practical work like merchandising and processing stock. Once you've been there for a few years you'll generally end up learning a bit of everything. Staff are usually super friendly and you'll meet lots of lovely people.
The challengesThe managers are generally at the mercy of ridiculous orders from head office. The company is INSANELY old fashioned and a lot of the times, employees just feel like a number. There is little to no ~culture~ or fun team activities and upper management will throw you under the bus to save wages.

Although it may seem very desirable, I have worked at 6 different stores and all stores seem to have the same dynamic - unprofessional managers, short staffed most shifts, and bad morality.
The good thingsThey offer a management course for full time staff
The challengesMinimum wage, unprofessional managers, terrible hours (unless full time) I.E doesn't roster staff on for contracted hours.
