What’s it like working at Freedom Furniture?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Freedom Furniture consistently praise the supportive and friendly team environment, with colleagues who work well together and create a family-like atmosphere. The management and leadership team are frequently commended for being approachable, honest and having a clear vision for the company's future. Freedom Furniture offers strong opportunities for career development and growth, with employees encouraged to drive their own careers and contribute ideas. The company culture is positive and encouraging, with a focus on staff buy-in and valuing employee input. Many employees also appreciate the flexibility in their roles and express passion for the beautiful product range and well-known Australian brand.

However, there are some potential challenges to consider. Sales targets and KPIs can be demanding, with pressure to meet individual budgets and commission thresholds that may fluctuate. The workload can be challenging at times, particularly during busy periods, with some employees working extended hours. Systems and technology are areas that need improvement, though this is recognised as part of the company's ongoing turnaround plan. The fast-paced retail environment can be intense, especially during peak trading periods, and some employees have noted a competitive sales atmosphere where individual performance is heavily emphasised. Additionally, delivery systems and operational processes have been identified as areas requiring enhancement to improve the overall customer experience.

would rather fall off earth than work here anymore
The good thingsOpen to trainees, Comfortable team and environment regardless of experience of not.
The challengesLack of training. Promises made that never go through, hostility between team members affect everyone. favouritism among older staff rather than fairness between all. Bad pay and pushes for high sales during slow months and during recession in the market. competition in sales and between sales staff. backstabbing and taking sales from others. unfair work treatment regarding jobs and things to do during quiet hours. no growth opportunity. lack of respect for women and lack of respect for new and younger woman. constant criticism from managers. Managers thinking you know how to handle everything when you have stated you don't. unfair treatment between people when one does more sales than the other but one does more work fixing situations.

The company placed a heavy focus on ever-increasing KPIs, sometimes without aligning them to market realities or the competitiveness of their product. This created a culture where team contributions weren’t consistently recognised unless tied directly to large sales. While I did learn resilience and the ability to perform under pressure, the lack of balance and support made it difficult to build a sustainable and positive career there.
The good thingsSome of their products are good. I repeat only a few of them. I would recommend homewares even though I feel they are overpriced. The rest of everything can be avoided.
The challengesHonestly, it was a terrible experience, and most people I connected with after I resigned felt the same. Micromanagement at its best and very toxic. If you don't perform consistently, they will likely remove you. Highly unorganised right from the store level to the deliveries from the distribution centre, to even the head office operations. Customers can go through a nightmare to get things sorted, and an extremely high-pressure work environment to meet individual budgets. They don't care about mental health, even though they pretend to. They seem to show this exterior facade of 'retail employer of the year', but it's nowhere near that when you actually work here. During my 1 year at Freedom, we had a regional head resign. I was working with a 3rd manager in 1 year. So you do the math. Do not work here if you want to live a peaceful, stress-free and successful life. It won't matter if you do ten good things for your store. Ultimately, if you don't meet your individual KPI, you are out.

    Please do not work here.
The good thingsSome people are kind. Nice product.
The challengesManagement team is egotistical and out of touch. Tense and unprofessional working environment. No solid team structure or support. No growth opportunities. They run a “lean” model which means you essentially are overworked and underpaid. Zero work life balance.
