Great start but went downhill fast
The good things- the hours were nice (min 30/week doing both tech and FOH) - half price food and free soft drinks/water on shift - FOH casuals were very supportive of each other - management team was good in my first few weeks until almost the entire team left or got transferred.
The challenges- a lot of the managers left around the same time so there were huge shifts in team leaders - very poor “training”. My first FOH shift I was handed a radio and left to figure it out - I was stuck doing a lot of the same cleaning work in tech every day - My initial tech training was signed off before it was completed and whenever I’d ask for further training I was shut down - I requested a meeting with the venue manager to bring up concerns I had about my training and safety at work and was talked over. I was told my lack of training was due to an incident in my first few weeks where I was struggling with a tool I had initially not been shown how to use - Injuries were not taken seriously. I injured my shoulder at work and was blamed for it. - When I was hired I was informed that I would be doing both FOH and tech so when technical issues came up while I was on FOH I could step in to solve the problem. Yet whenever I did this I was reprimanded.

Don’t waste your time, I would go elsewhere or at least a different venue
The good things- some of the people (SOME) - the atmosphere - if you enjoy working with kids and families it is a really fun role
The challenges- having supervisors and main managers that talk behind your back about personal details was a main reason for leaving - unreasonable hours - many drunk people in the venue as its surfers - no coordination

A decent start to the hospo industry, not a long term job.
The good thingsThe team culture, and the initial training.
The challengesThe corporate culture and the poor support from upper management. High staff turnover due to constant burnout and understaffing. The kind of corporate profit-obsessed business that will say "you're family" but will complain about having to pay you minimum wage.

The good thingsOne of the best company to work with. Specially the perks. Work environment and management always there to help you. People you can trust. Look after their team members.
The challengesVery busy specially school holidays and weekends.

In venues, it's a perfect place for a casual employee who wants to be part of a close knit team whilst being paid a good wage. Not so great if you want to extend out of that.
The good thingsThe Funlab work culture in Victoria is unmatched. Drink at work (off-shift, not support office) with colleagues at discounted rates and frequently going out and doing stuff outside of work. The social aspect is what kept me there for 2 years.
The challengesFunlabs Executives care, but don't care. They care about the business more than the employees and forget that highly dedicated casual employees in their venues might be doing more for the business than they realise.

A great hospo and entertainment job that turned into so much more
The good thingsFunlab has great opportunities for growth and development. They have a fantastic culture where you are encouraged to be yourself and bring your 100% authentic self to work. A very strong sense of diversity and inclusion in every aspect of the company.
The challengesFunlab has recently had a strong growth phase, where change happened quite often and quickly. This meant a constant change to our work environment and this can be quite hard to keep up with.

There's never a wrong time to be a Motherfunner!
The good things- people focused culture; inclusiveness committees, wellbeing programs - inclusive and accepting - fast paced and agile - flat structured hierarchy which provides opportunity to develop in depth and breadth, not just linear pathways - dogs in the office - hybrid work model - work/life balance
The challenges- some people can get left behind if they can't keep up with the pace - high expectations of performance, which can be difficult with lean people resources - some salaries are below market but the culture and the people (and the dogs) can be much more rewarding

    Bad culture, poor leadership
The good thingsGood perks with activities, half price food and drinks.
The challengesWhere to start? Very, very toxic and immature work place. Management doesn't know what they're doing. Sometimes managers don't even see you all shift which isn't good leadership. You're also encouraged to solicit good reviews from guests which feels very dishonest if you're a genuine person wanting to provide good service.

Depending on who your higher management team is, it can be difficult to progress and trying to implement what the companies core values are can be challenging as higher management don't set that role model standard.
The good thingsGreat environment if you love being busy at work. A lot of things to do on the floor & behind the scenes but if it's not distributed properly between the management team, it can be too much.
The challengesA lot of training procedures and support around but if it's not actioned towards you by higher management, it can be very overwhelming on the floor and feel like you are being set up to fail.

The good thingsGreat perks, amazing salary, friendly team within the venue and throughout the entire company. Very supportive and definitely the best Hospitality company I've worked for within my 12 years of being in the industry.
The challengesEver changing schedule and some late nights but you do get one weekend off a month.

'Motherfunners' - The people make the place
The good thingsThe people are incredible here - they call them Motherfunners and it's the perfect descriptor. Free activities - 50% food & drinks - development opportunities - atmosphere; all other great things about Funlab
The challengesALOT is expected of every person. It's definitely a fun place to work but that is not an indication of it being chilled - very high paced!

Single greatest company i've worked for... hands down!
The good thingsOne of a kind workplace with a strong focus on developing and involving their employees. The attitude from many of the main leadership group is infectious and spreads throughout the rest of the business. You are given the tools to do your job and unlike other employers, you are not. just another number at a desk.
The challengesCOVID was the single greatest challenge i faced during my time with he company

My experience was both good and bad.
The good thingsBenefits are a big plus side (free access to all Funlab venues), staff and managers are super friendly to everyone. Very accepting environment in terms of LGBT+ people.
The challengesFrequently have to give up your weekend nights, so there's little room to socialise with your friends when they're free. Managers also don't give feedback regularly and expect you to know when your habits are wrong instead of them addressing it so you can fix it. Can feel easily excluded when you don't fit in with the group.

Management was atrocious and rarely responds to emails.
The good thingsThe people working there are great. It attracts fun people who enjoy a good time which is very evident.
The challengesManagement have no incentive to communicate and there is a priority on assigning fault or liability to staff.

A company that strives to treat their employees like a family but ultimately falls short of the mark
The good thingsStaff are fantastic, career progression offered, they encourage you to have fun
The challengesVery clicky, force people to compete for hours/threaten you with less hours regularly, hard work rarely appreciated meaningfully, fail to respect other commitments and work/life balance

Definitely lots of fun but the ‘core values’ aren’t realistic for a company of this size and as in most hospitality venues unfortunately it can be very clicky.
The good thingsGreat perks, people come to our venues to have fun so generally a fun experience with customers. Some really great incentives and can be a fun environment to work in depending on your team/ management.
The challengesDependent on the venue some managers can be more proactive and positive, some unfortunately can seem quite lazy and will do the bare minimum.

The good thingsEveryday is different, fun, exciting and challenging. There is a strong support network of leaders who are loyal, passionate and committed to the business and its people. Career and personal growth opportunities are readily available and supported. Achievements are truly celebrated and rewarded and efforts are not unnoticed.
The challengesThe challenges are what keep you motivated to achieve more. Life would be boring without them! Challenges in this business come with reward and recognition for overcoming them and you are supported through them. The business is receptive to feedback to make positive change.
