Sadly my experience didn’t live up to the values that are displayed on the walls.
The good thingsThe only good thing was resigning and knowing I would never have to go back.
The challengesIt’s very challenging working in the QLD stores at the moment with the current VAPs program. There is little to no regard shown for Australian Work Standards. Current staff are treated as though they are of little to no value. Turnover is very high due to the current management. If you are on a salary, expect to work well over 90hrs a fortnight. Proceed with caution.

Promotion favored relationships over merit; hard work increased load without recognition.
The good thingsEmployee perks, such as the discounted food, bonuses and discount. There were career paths, job stability and suitable hours, as it was a big corporation you were appropriately paid etc.
The challengesPromotions into management were often based more on personal relationships than merit. Hard work frequently resulted in increased workload rather than recognition or reward. There was a strong management ego at times, and approaches were often inconsistent and perceived as unfair. If you want it slightly more neutral (e.g. for a survey or exit feedback): Management progression did not always feel merit‑based, with decisions often influenced by relationships. High performers were regularly given additional workload without equivalent benefit. Leadership approaches could feel inconsistent and, at times, unfair.

Great, and would recommend to others to work and experience the Ingka life.
The good thingsGood discounts on food, people are great to work with on every level.
The challengesChallenges would be technology wise, it is a very slow moving company given their dominance in the sector/industry.

I am currently working at IKEA, where I have developed strong flexibility with rosters, teamwork skills, and the ability to thrive in a multicultural and supportive environment.
The good thingsI am currently working at IKEA, where I have gained valuable experience in adapting to flexible rosters, collaborating within a large team, and contributing to a multicultural and friendly workplace. This role has strengthened my ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, remain adaptable in a fast-paced environment, and maintain a positive and professional attitude in all situations.

The good thingsGreat people and leadership. Challenging and interesting work.
The challengesA lot of what you learn in Sales in specific to IKEA, making transitioning to other role outside of the company difficult.

The good thingsthe people you work with and customer interactions

Good meatballs, poor senior leadership & politics
The good thingsDuring COVID they continued to operate, so team members didn't need to get stood down. Some very talented team members and good employee discount.
The challengesThe politics, the lack of genuine care for staff wellbeing, a real "us" and "them" mentality from senior leadership team. People scared to speak the truth because it would harm their chance of future promotion opportunities.

For a business to value Togetherness and only offer a video interview that is recorded and viewed later seems very disingenuous considering the effort and time involved for the applicant. I could add more to this but seek will not allow.
The good thingsThey only want people that can talk to themselves on video and not be able to build report with people.
The challengesBeing able to ask question through the interview is very important as it shows your communication processes and the way the employee will work with others.

A low paying retail job that expects you to take on work many pay grades above you
The good thingsAbility to increase or decrease contracted hours as needed, generally nice people within the department to work with
The challengesmanagement, poor software/resources. Management expect you to use your own device/phone to complete routine, daily tasks multiple times a day instead of the company replacing broken resources

A great place to work if you are looking for a part time job as they are flexible with your needs.
The good thingsIt is a part time job so it is perfect for mums like me. Great work-life balance. Management is very flexible with the needs of the employees.
The challengesWaking up early because I work in Logistics so I start very early in the morning but it allows me to come home early and do a lot of things.

IKEA invested and took a chance on someone that was simply a university student, on a 30hr contract. I've been so incredibly blessed to have had ambitious and inspiring leaders, who supported me in my journey. Although I am no longer in this position, I have been able to utilise my experience to take me onto my next adventure (still within IKEA). IKEA is more than a job :)
The good thingsThe people that become lifelong friends. The managers that support your growth by providing you with development opportunities and on the job training.
The challengesIt is a wonderful company that becomes your second home, I don't see this as a challenge, as this was more of a personality trait of mine to dedicate myself to the job I love.

Great company to work for and learn many skills in retailing and entrepreneurship.
The good thingsRelatively strong culture and values, so most of the co-workers like-minded and are really good to work with. IKEA is a really progressive company, so there are lots of systems and knowledge to learn in all areas of business. I learnt so many transferrable skills at IKEA and have held onto many great friends from my time there. Co-worker amenities are great compared to many companies I have worked for.
The challengesAt the end of the day, it's still 7-days-a-week retail, so work life balance can be an issue, especially if you have a young family. As a lean retailer, there is constant pressure throughout the day, so you are working hard, but also, everyone is expected to help where it's needed - good for learning and understanding other areas of the business, but not great if your own work area suffers. Since the passing of the founder, Ingvar Kamprad, in 2018, I have noticed a waning push of the company culture and values, with a greater prioritisation on the bottom line ... some of the leaders may have forgotten that if you look after the customer and your staff, the profits should naturally follow?

Lots of talk of support, inclusion and career progression - but not a lot of action.
The good thingsFantastic friendship and culture amongst fellow co-workers. A great staff discount on products in-store. Subsidised meals for staff in the staff restaurant. Clean and tidy working environment. Fairly competitive salary for a retail business.
The challengesWork-life balance made difficult with rostering - particularly for weekends. Lots of talk from team leaders and managers of supporting co-workers with career progression, however in practice this is a very difficult thing to achieve unless you are highly favoured by team leaders and managers - particularly if you want to move into other departments within the business. Frustrating I.T systems for furniture planning, stock management, inventory and logistics - making the most basic of tasks (i.e: selling furniture and booking delivery) very challenging.

Good company 5 years ago, not now. If you like to express yourself and have a say, forget about working at any of the Victoria stores, they care too much about money and not about their employees.
The good thingsDesign team has good working days and hours, set break times, very little overtime. Cheap restaurant food and a store cake almost every week.
The challengesManagement, big staff turn over due to management, low salary, very high work expectations, cant be creative or express your point of view without repercussions, the way Australia runs there store are a lot different to other countries. Too many opinions, a lot of talking from management but no follow through. Didn't get exit interview as per their values and talent process, they pick and choose how they action tasks depending on the person, they really don't follow the IKEA Values.

As an intern, I was widely recognised for my strong performance in managing the relationship with the overseas developers who built and localised our CRM system, as well as bringing to life the IKEA Family loyalty programme along with its of workshops and email marketing campaigns during the first months of operation.
The good thingsVery friendly and respectful people in the company, there was a lot of collaboration going on. It is a company were you learn a lot, and it challenges you on a daily basis.
The challengesI started out as an intern, so the biggest challenge was taking care of multiple tasks within two different areas, the CRM and Loyalty team, and the Market Intelligence team. As a new company that was opening it's first stores in Latinamerica (job was in IKEA Chile), the most important challenge for me was making things happen, negotiating with other areas and pushing forward our projects, specially our Loyalty Program.

A safe, inclusive and positive culture at IKEA Richmond. Leadership is visible and supportive. Genuine opportunities to be developed and go places with the brand if you wish. Otherwise, plenty of perks and variety to make your time here enjoyable.
The good thingsThis isn't your average retail business. IKEA is kooky but in a good way; there is a great culture within the IKEA Richmond store. Everyone is free and safe to be who they want to be, there is no judgement. There are great benefits for working here - a good discount, staff restaurant, free coffee and fruit, plus a bonus scheme. Plenty of shifts and variety in the work.
The challengesThere are a lot of customers every day so if you were nervous or an introvert, it might be challenging. The store operates 24/7 so other opportunities as well in food or logistics where you don't need to be here during busy periods.
