Great company to work for and learn many skills in retailing and entrepreneurship. The good thingsRelatively strong culture and values, so most of the co-workers like-minded and are really good to work with. IKEA is a really progressive company, so there are lots of systems and knowledge to learn in all areas of business. I learnt so many transferrable skills at IKEA and have held onto many great friends from my time there. Co-worker amenities are great compared to many companies I have worked for.
The challengesAt the end of the day, it's still 7-days-a-week retail, so work life balance can be an issue, especially if you have a young family. As a lean retailer, there is constant pressure throughout the day, so you are working hard, but also, everyone is expected to help where it's needed - good for learning and understanding other areas of the business, but not great if your own work area suffers. Since the passing of the founder, Ingvar Kamprad, in 2018, I have noticed a waning push of the company culture and values, with a greater prioritisation on the bottom line ... some of the leaders may have forgotten that if you look after the customer and your staff, the profits should naturally follow?
