Vast changes to the management of employees needs to occur to make it an ideal place to work.
The good thingsWorking with other midwives who are dedicated to providing the best care possible. The sense of camaraderie, when the workload is unreasonably high we all pulled together to survive the shift.
The challengesPoor management. Very little care of their employees. The budget comes first so we frequently worked under staffed. Poor interpersonal skills at every level of management.

The good thingsDepends on the department. The surgical department offers little opportunity for increasing your scope of practice. Medical decision has better opportunities to develop scope of practise
The challengesLittle opportunity for those who want to be a nurse practitioner

    Very positive experience!
The good thingsFriendly and helpful staff. Before becoming a tertiary hospital, this used to be a community hospital but it still maintains that community feel. The new wards are very well thought out and well set up for ease of work.
The challengesSome of the older wards that have been updated are not as well set up as the new ones to make your shifts run as smooth as they could, but this is a minor problem and the friendly staff make up for that!

Lyell McEwin is an excellent hospital to work at but faces the challenges that all public hospitals face in terms of funding, services, staffing etc however the staff all work together knowing the limitations we all face.
