It's amazing to think that at the start of the millennium, the nbn® network didn't even exist. Now, it's an essential part of our daily lives and has greatly impacted how we live in Australia. In 2009, the Commonwealth of Australia established the nbn (National Broadband Network) as a Government Business Enterprise (GBE) with a specific goal: to create, construct, and manage a wholesale broadband access network for the country. Our network spans the country, making it possible for internet retailers to provide access to reasonably priced broadband services for everyone, connecting communities and businesses all across Australia.

What’s it like working at NBN Co?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at NBN Co appreciate the positive and supportive working atmosphere that encourages teamwork and collaboration. They value the good career opportunities, including the chance to work on major projects transforming Australia, as well as the exposure to varied technologies and industry standard practices that allow for professional development. The work-life balance is seen as a positive, with flexibility to accommodate personal requirements, and the pay and benefits are considered excellent, particularly for management roles.

However, there are some potential challenges noted, such as issues with management, including a lack of technical expertise, micromanagement, and frequent restructures that can impact job security. The workload can be high, with pressure to deliver in a fast-paced environment, particularly for certain roles. A number of reviews mention challenges with the organisational culture, such as a risk-averse approach, internal politics, and a lack of direction. Additionally, some employees have noted limited opportunities for career growth, especially for non-specialist or entry-level roles.

Great pay and rewarding work, but culture has taken a turn for the worse in the past few years.
The good thingsExcellent pay for management roles. Being part of a project that has helped transform Australia was very rewarding. Decent career progression.
The challengesExtremely risk averse due to the political, media, and regulatory scrutiny. Culture has shifted from one of building the network at any cost to one of focusing on profitability. Because of this, people are constantly worried about whether their job is safe, so people have become scared to speak up. Restructures (which are understandable at this point in nbn’s lifecycle), are not strategic. They are done bottom-up. A 10-person Executive Leadership team is ridiculous for a company this size, especially when such deep cuts are being made through the organisation.
