What’s it like working at Spotlight?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Spotlight appreciate their friendly and supportive colleagues, who create a collaborative and team-oriented environment. The pay is considered good, particularly for younger workers, and staff value the employee discount. Many enjoy the work environment, especially those with an interest in creative and craft products, and some benefit from hybrid work flexibility and approachable management.

However, there are some potential challenges, including inconsistent management experiences with varying levels of support and communication. Training and onboarding could be enhanced, as some employees feel they need to work things out independently. Shift allocation can be limited or inconsistent, with some staff receiving fewer hours than expected. Additionally, workload can be demanding, particularly for Department Managers dealing with large deliveries and limited labour budgets, and staffing levels during busy periods can make it challenging to manage customer demands effectively.

The most toxic, draining, and horrific place you could step foot into.
The good thingsMost of the daily team members were good people. Some of the customers were too.
The challengesI dreaded going to work each day to the point I was making myself sick. No training, no support, just a store manager who told me "I'm not here to hold your hand, you're a manager, figure it out". Expected that you'll do unpaid overtime almost daily. Dare to breathe too loudly and the store manager would scream at you in front of the other staff. And if you stand up for the safety of your team? Better have another job lined up. The store manager actively encourages staff to leave, saying if they quit "it's the trash taking itself out". Far far far too much work, no training, never enough staff, and not enough hours in the day. And don't even think about helping customers, "get the stock on the floor, it'll sell itself, you're not there to help customers" as the store manager used to say. And that's before you even consider how cramped and dangerous the shop floor is on a daily basis.
