What’s it like working at Sydney Water?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Sydney Water value the supportive colleagues and positive team culture, consistently noting that people are friendly, welcoming and collaborative. The competitive salary and benefits, including above-average pay and the 9-day fortnight with RDOs, are frequently appreciated. Many employees also enjoy the flexible work arrangements and good work-life balance in a low-stress environment. The training programmes are noted as extensive and effective, and employees appreciate the job stability that comes with working at an established organisation.

However, there are some potential challenges to consider. Management styles can vary significantly, with some experiencing micromanagement whilst others receive minimal oversight, and frequent manager changes can be disruptive. Employees have observed that senior management can be disconnected from day-to-day operations, with communication sometimes unclear. Career advancement opportunities can be limited, and onboarding processes could be more structured for new starters. The organisation is undergoing transformation, which means priorities can shift and requires flexibility. Cross-team collaboration can be challenging due to siloed structures, and some roles experience demanding workloads with expectations of overtime.

    Lacks growth and balance
The good thingsJob security and the pay
The challengesWork life balance isn't great. Workload isn’t evenly distributed. Some people do far less but are paid the same as those putting in extra effort. The culture could definitely be improved and there’s limited opportunity for career progression. Moving up is difficult unless someone senior leaves which doesn't happen often. Many employees stay longterm more out of comfort or limited external options than genuine growth.

Poorly managed and unsupportive of work life balance.
The good things9 Day fortnight, decent salary, interesting role, worked with some good people.
The challengesPoor support for new starters. Lack of training and support causing unsafe work conditions at times. Lack of career advancement, you practically have to wait for someone to retire to have a chance of progressing in the role. Management has a culture of either micro managing your every movement, or no management at all. The company says it supports a "work life balance" but in reality does not. Excessive amounts of overtime.
