Old antiquated system with equally old and antiquated staff members. Avoid at all cost
The good thingsGood infrastructure (brand new buildings) and new materials to work with.
The challengesNo learning management system in a digital age. Rely on teachers working after hours to correct work and enter marks into an antiquated system. When asked why it hasn't been updated and I can help to move to a digital learning management system, I was told they were not interested in changing. Filing cabinets of student's work kept for years before they outsource to a company to come in and shred it all. Not an ounce of environmental concern.

Applying inclusive teaching strategies to support diverse learners in CGEA and EAL classrooms at TAFE Gippsland.
The good thingsI enjoyed the opportunity to teach CGEA I and II and EAL classes at TAFE Gippsland, where I worked with students from a wide range of backgrounds and age groups. It was rewarding to help learners build confidence in their literacy and language skills. My previous experience in EAL and IELTS teaching, along with my TESL Certificate, helped me adapt lessons to suit individual needs. I also appreciated being able to apply the theoretical knowledge from my Master’s in Special Education to real classroom situations, especially when supporting students with learning difficulties or mental health challenges. The flexibility of the casual role allowed me to balance teaching with my studies, and seeing students progress was a highlight of the experience.
The challengesTeaching CGEA I and II to Australian school leavers with diverse needs and age groups was challenging. Students came with different levels of literacy, motivation, and personal circumstances, which made lesson planning complex. As a casual teacher, limited time and resources sometimes made it difficult to provide consistent support. Some students faced barriers such as trauma, mental health issues, or unstable housing, which affected their engagement. Improving access to personalised learning support, offering regular professional development for staff, and strengthening collaboration with student services could help address these challenges. More structured pathways for students transitioning from school to adult education would also support better engagement and outcomes.
