A creative, passionate and friendly environment to work in.
The good thingsEveryone was welcoming, friendly and wanted to help you.
The challengesMore time to grow and learn about the industry would have helped to further develop my skills moving forward.

Good for a diverse workload and to learn a lot, but isn’t sustainable long term typically.
The good thingsMentorship. Career development. People. The actual work was enjoyable (for me). Diverse workload due to the small teams. Most of these positives were because of the team I worked in and is different for everyone. It’s a relaxed office where management is typically a bit flexible, but intense workload.
The challengesVery poor salary. Management keeps adding work to people with no extra raise or promotion, simply to “upskill”. A bit old-fashioned and hard to progress.

Great company for someone starting out in media but the low salary + lack of opportunity for career development means you would only want to stay there 2 years max.
The good thingsGood stepping stone for a career in media, open to paying for training courses to further skills, open to hiring recent university graduates with little to no experience
The challengesExtremely low salary, company slow to invest/adapt to industry change, particularly in the digital sphere, cost-cutting meant that critical staff were not replaced in time, resulting in big workloads for small teams and low morale among staff.

Great opportunity which I found hard to leave.
The good thingsManagement are investing in digital and this presented a great opportunity. Because of the evolving nature of the role, Universal Magazines allowed me to be the master of my destiny - expanding my contribution across a number of exciting projects.
The challengesDue to the nature of the businesses digital transition, prioritising opportunities and learning quickly is a challenge faced for their digital team.

Pro-active sales culture that values SME customers
The good thingsThe sales culture suits independent and autonomous operators - if you like ownership you will like working at UM. If you take you customers needs seriously them UM offers a range of services that are good for SME advertisers. If you enjoy working with customers and finding out what they really need then a sales role at UM will give you scope and options that will work. I have contributed to many of the processes and product ideas that the company is deploying to market today…they are fairly collaborative. I always had good relationships with the Editors who are commercial and creative. The company has great brands and great people
The challengesI worked in Melbourne and HQ is in Sydney, so I experienced remote office issue from time to time, but these far outweighed the benefits. I got to work from home and earn good money by selling products that have been designed fro the market.

5 to 6 years in the role, current employee
Joining the Universal Magazines 'Family' was the best start to my career and has continually brought me new experiences, opportunities and creative satisfaction.
The good thingsGreat company to work for - I've experienced working for Universal both Inhouse and as a freelancer and love the commitment and loyalty of long term staff members and the quality and range of the magazines.
The challengesI haven't experienced any challenges that weren't opportunities for change or further development. And always felt like I could discuss these at any time.

It was a wrong decision to join such a poorly managed company!!! BIG NO to the people who is looking for a secure and long term reliable job.
The good thingsNice looking glossy magazines covering most of the lifestyle and projects.
The challengesToo many unrealistic challenges as all the good accounts has been taken care by existing AM and very small Industry to generate new client and revenue plus very bad reputation in the market that no one wants to spend any money in those categories.
