What’s it like working at University of Melbourne?

    AI summary of recent reviews

The University of Melbourne offers a supportive and collaborative environment where employees value the opportunity to work alongside passionate academics and researchers. The institution provides excellent work-life balance with flexible arrangements, competitive salaries and benefits, and strong professional development opportunities. The campus location and working environment are consistently praised, contributing to overall job satisfaction.

However, employees note that the multi-layered management structure can create communication challenges, while complex administrative processes can slow down progress. There are also concerns about job security due to the prevalence of fixed-term contracts, and some roles, particularly academic positions, face high workload pressures.

Melb Uni - always something to improve!
The good thingsThere's a ton of work to do - primarily due to the immaturity of the University in terms of ITSM / ITIL, project delivery, and lack of formality (e.g. SLA's / SLT's), etc. This means that any true IT pro will find the place isn't boring and there's always improvements to be made.
The challengesThere's a lack of intent / "want" to improve services and actually move into the 21st century. This is largely due to "dead wood" in the various IT delivery groups and business in general, and union / EBA protections.

Could a good place to work with a different management team
The good things- Working with researchers who are doing really interesting science - Helping facilitate scientific advances - Parkville campus is accessible and a good place to work - Salaries are better than most other universities
The challengesWas a very good place to work until changes in management resulted in an irreconcilable breakdown of the relationship between management and the staff directly dealing with stakeholders. Service delivery suffered and experienced staff members left or were made redundant.

For progress, the Uni needs to hire more external to the tertiary sector & be more outwardly looking
The good thingsconnecting with people who are passionate in their work (mostly academics), and gleaning from the huge braintrust of intellectuals.
The challengestoo process-driven, so much so that systems becoming the hindrance to progress and innovation!
