Some of the teaching staff at Deakin involved with the teaching of the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) are phenomenal and deserving of everything. The student support department is not, and caused me to essentially take an extra year to complete my degree.

I thought it was anextremely well structured well presented course. The content was amazing, the assessment was fair and the online course content content and teaching was a very engaging. It was social and contact with other students and teaching staff easily accessible so I didn't miss the on-campus experience.

The course itself had a great deal of content that is relevant to the working force. The only criticism I would have is the lack of practical experience you get. I have heard since completing my degree that they have added more of that component.
Response from Deakin University

Loved the course content in terms of theory. Lecturers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their subjects! I just wish there had been more of a focus on practical skills and placement. I walked out with loads of knowledge but no idea how to put it into practice. I found it difficult to balance the study load with life while I suffered from anxiety, but Deakin provided amazing support and flexibility for me which helped me complete my degree.

Not enough practical learning. Following completing the 4 year degree I am unable to find work in any related field as the course did not provide any practical experience. I don't feel that I was actually taught a skill that is desired by employers or useful.
Response from Deakin University
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Ensuring our courses provide students with practical, hands-on experience is important to us and we'd love to hear more about how we can improve. If you're up to it, please email us at studentcomplaints@deakin.edu.au.

Support and delivery

How Deakin's online courses are delivered

As an online student you’ll watch lectures, complete readings and participate in tutorials, just like an on-campus student. The difference is you’ll do this online, when it suits you.

Deakin was one of the first universities in Australia to deliver courses for off-campus students, and they pride themselves on an online learning system that is cutting-edge, engaging and easy to use.

Through their platform CloudDeakin, you’ll:

  • Access almost all your learning resources
  • Watch the same lectures that are delivered on-campus, and
  • Interact with your tutors (you'll have one dedicated tutor for each unit).

You’ll also be involved in conversations with other students and your tutors through virtual classrooms and discussion boards.

Support services for online students

You can access the same support services as on-campus students – either via Deakin’s website, over the phone, on Skype, or in person if you are near a Deakin campus.

Specialist online advisers can help you develop successful study skills, discuss your course direction and provide career guidance.

You can also access:

  • Online library support
  • Counselling
  • Financial assistance
  • Medical services and more

The online orientation at the start of your course will introduce you to helpful resources.
