This course involves the study of food in relation to health and illness. Nutrition examines the role of food nutrients in the metabolic and physiological processes of the body and dietetics is concerned with the prevention and treatment of a variety of food-related diseases. Dietitians/nutritionists interpret scientific knowledge about food in relation to health and translate it into practical information to help individuals and communities change their eating habits and improve health. They spend most of their time working with people, through education, counselling, advocacy or management. The course equips graduates to practise as dietitians in a variety of settings, including hospital, public health, community and research settings.
