What's it like to be a Creative Director?
Creative Directors are found in a variety of industries such as the advertising, graphic design, film, music, video game, fashion, or entertainment industries. Creative Director’s maintain a cohesive look and feel of a project by ensuring the visuals, messaging or interactive designs are engaging and effective. They are also responsible for establishing the budget and timeline for each project and manage a team of creative staff to create, plan and deliver a strategic vision for clients.
Tasks and duties
- Deciding how to turn ideas and messages into visuals.
- Choosing and approving photographs, artwork, graphics and designs.
- Creating and executing for a publication, product or campaign style guide.
- Meeting with and creating designs for clients or marketing and advertising departments.
- Presenting work to clients and making changes to a project’s direction as needed.
- Managing and motivating a team of graphic designers, web designers and artists.
- Keeping projects on budget and deadline.

To become a Creative Director, it may be an advantage to hold a degree and several years of experience.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor degree in Art, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Marketing, Journalism or another design-related field. You may choose to pursue a Master of Fine Arts or Master of Business Administration degree to further your skills and knowledge.
- 2.Gain some work experience. You might start your career as a Graphic Designer, Artist, Photographer, Marketing Assistant or in other artistic jobs before advancing to a Creative Director position. During this time, you should build a work portfolio that you can present to Hiring Managers.
- 3.Because content is becoming increasingly digital, you might take vocational courses and seminars on topics such as graphic design software or digital design to keep your skills current and attractive to potential employers.
