What's it like to be a Bar Manager?
A Bar Manager looks after the operations of a bar, and ensures the wellbeing of patrons and staff. Bar Managers work with the security operations of the bar to ensure legal requirements are met. Bar Managers are responsible for rostering staff, ensuring adequate stock is available and keeping things running smoothly.
Tasks and duties
- Supervising and supporting staff.
- Monitoring bar, restaurant and conference facilities.
- Ensuring compliance with liquor, gaming and associated laws and regulations.
- Reconciliation and accounting of cash registers and EFTPOS terminals.
- Ensuring customer satisfaction with service and resolving issues when they arise.
- Supervising stock control and cellar activities.
- Managing compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
- Working with security to log incidents and manage clientele.
How to become a Bar Manager
While formal educational qualifications are not essential to become a Bar Manager, you will need to hold a
Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification.
- 1.You’ll need experience working in hospitality, especially in bars. Most Bar Managers have at least 1 year of experience, particularly in a staff supervisory capacity.
- 2.Obtain a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) qualification, available through TAFE, hospitality schools and private training institutions. You may also need a Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG).
- 3.You may also need to undertake an Approved Manager accreditation, depending on which state you plan to work in. These are available through registered training organisations. For more information, contact the liquor licensing authority in your state.
- 4.Consider completing a vocational qualification in hospitality management to validate your skill sand experience.
