What's it like to be a Building Designer?
Responsible for creative, efficient design of buildings for clients, the role of a Building Designer covers a wide range of activities. Similar to a Draftsperson or an Architect, Building Designers have the unique benefit of not requiring qualifications to be able to undertake their work in Australia.
Tasks and duties
- Meeting with clients to take and understand the brief in detail.
- Designing and interpreting plans.
- Undertaking feasibility studies.
- Researching and analysing council codes, codes of practice and industry regulations.
- Coordinating submissions to council.
- Drawing up contracts and ensuring terms are adhered to.
- Building site supervision.
- Liaising with clients to discuss progress, impediments and project milestones.
- Project managing suppliers, contractors and resources.
How to become a Building Designer
While Building Designers don’t require specific qualifications in Australia, holding a qualification in building design may be an advantage.
- 1.Complete a Diploma of Building Design (CPP50911) through TAFE or Registered Training Organisation. This course will take between 18 months and 3 years, depending on the institution. A Diploma in Building Design will enable you to undertake building work of all kinds covered by the Building Code of Australia, except for Construction Type A buildings.
- 2.Complete a Bachelor degree majoring in architecture at university. This will take you 3 years to complete full-time, and will require you to have completed year 12 or gain special admission. You can remain unregistered and work as a Building Designer throughout your studies and continue after you graduate.
- 3.Gain experience and transferable skills through roles in construction, drafting, building and industrial design.
