What's it like to be an Electrical Estimator?
Electrical Estimators are qualified professionals who provide cost estimate summaries for electrical work on industrial, commercial and civil construction projects.
Tasks and duties
- Reviewing documents, drawings and plans to determine the scope of work.
- Preparing accurate electrical estimates and pricing for a job, taking into consideration all project requirements.
- Sourcing suppliers and understanding the materials, labour and equipment pricing involved.
- Ensuring estimates comply with legislation, standards and safety requirements.
- Communicating with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Preparing and reviewing tender submissions.
How to become an Electrical Estimator
To work as an Electrical Estimator, it is usually required to be an experienced, trade-qualified and licensed Electrician, or hold an Engineering or related qualification.
- 1.Complete an electrical apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is usually four years, and will include some structured training through a registered training organisation to complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30811).
- 2.Apply for an Electrician’s Licence. As licensing and registration requirements may vary between states, you should check with the licensing body in your state.
- 3.Gain experience within the industrial and commercial sectors. Look for employment opportunities as a Junior Electrical Estimator and gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of a Senior Electrical Estimator.
