What's it like to be a Building Surveyor?
Building Surveyors are responsible for ensuring that buildings are constructed safely and are suitable to be occupied. To do this, Building Surveyors consider, consult, advise and enforce legislative requirements.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing, approving and reviewing building works on existing and new buildings.
- Conducting onsite inspections during the building process, ensuring the construction meets compliance, is structurally sound, energy efficient, accessible and able to be safely occupied.
- Conducting pre-purchase inspections of buildings, audit for accessibility, and document and report on breaches and altered plans.
How to become a Building Surveyor
To become a Building Surveyor in Australia, a qualification in building surveying is usually required. These are typically three-year, full time, bachelor-level qualifications.
- 1.Undertake a qualification in building surveying. This will usually be a Bachelor of Building Surveying. Prerequisite subjects are typically English and mathematics.
- 2.Some states require accreditation from the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS), so ensure your chosen course meets your state’s requirements.
- 3.Gather professional experience in building surveying and undertake professional development activities each year in order to work your way up to a professional who can undertake the assessment, approval and inspection of all buildings
