What's it like to be a Digital Project Manager?
Digital Project Managers are responsible for scoping, strategising, executing, managing and delivering their projects in alignment with their client or the organisation they work for. In smaller organisations, the Digital Project Manager may also do hands-on technical work, such as user experience testing or front-end development.
Tasks and duties
- Defining, agreeing and documenting project scope.
- Breaking down the project scope into actionable tasks.
- Managing team members, facilitating meetings, and organising or prioritising workflows.
- Managing time and budget, writing reports.
- Assessing risks and managing changes to project scope.
- Tracking and triaging new development and change requests.
- Communicating with stakeholders and giving presentations on progress, impediments and resources.
- Assessing and evaluating project success.
How to become a Digital Project Manager
Formal qualifications are not necessary to become a Digital Project Manager, but experience or formal training in project management methodologies may be advantageous. A short course or bootcamp may help you develop relevant skills.
- 1.Consider training in the Agile project management methodology to become a Scrum Master. Agile is the project management methodology of choice in the digital industry.
- 2.Learn traditional waterfall project management methodologies, such as PRINCE2 or PMBOK.
- 3.One of the most common ways to become a Digital Project Manager is with hands-on experience, working in digital (particularly as a Digital Producer) and taking on more responsibility until you are accountable for end-to-end projects. Once you have delivered a successful project it is a lot easier for you to get opportunities to show your skills again.
