What's it like to be a Fleet Manager?
Fleet Managers optimise the transportation needs of an organisation. Their role includes selecting vehicles to purchase, hiring, training and scheduling drivers and overseeing vehicle maintenance and regulatory compliance.
Tasks and duties
- Recruiting, managing and training drivers.
- Choosing the most efficient vehicles for a fleet in accordance with business needs.
- Negotiating purchases, including deciding whether to rent, lease or buy vehicles.
- Organising the maintenance and repair of vehicles.
- Ensuring vehicles meet safety rules, laws and regulations and compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Scheduling drivers and routes, tracking transport vehicles, and handling any problems that arise.
How to become a Fleet Manager
It’s possible to work as a Fleet Manager without a formal qualification, but you usually need a combination of education and industry experience.
- 1.Complete a relevant VET course, such as a Diploma of Logistics (TLI50221). Alternatively, complete a relevant bachelor degree, such as a Bachelor of Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) or Bachelor of Commerce.
- 2.Gain experience in logistics, procurement or transportation management. On-the-job training is often provided for entry-level roles in these fields.
- 3.Complete additional certifications and/or licences as required by your employer. This could include a heavy vehicle licence.
