What's it like to be a Heavy Diesel Fitter?
A Heavy Diesel Fitter is a mechanic who specialises in the repair and maintenance of heavy vehicles or plant equipment. They inspect engines, diagnose and repair faults, perform routine maintenance and dismantle and reassemble engines and other components.
Tasks and duties
- Diagnosing, repairing and overhauling diesel, petrol and gas–powered vehicles and plant equipment including trucks, tractors, bulldozers, buses, drill rigs and generators.
- Maintaining, diagnosing and repairing hydraulic components of diesel–powered attachments such as hoists, lifts, booms, pumps and buckets.
- Dismantling, repairing and reassembling engines, transmissions, steering columns and other components.
- Using oxy, electric, TIG and MIG welding techniques to replace and repair parts.
- Diagnosing and repairing heavy vehicle fuel injections systems.
- Testing repaired parts for proper performance.
- Testing and repairing basic electrical circuits.
- Using computers and specialised tools to diagnose and repair faults.
- Inspecting vehicles and machinery for faults.
- Following workplace Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) protocols.
How to become a Heavy Diesel Fitter
A Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Engine Technology (AUR31516) is usually required to attain a Heavy Diesel Fitter role. This is typically attained through the completion of a three to four–year apprenticeship.
- 1.Search for employers offering apprenticeships that provide the Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Engine Technology (AUR31516). This apprenticeship usually takes three to four years to complete and consists of a mixture of paid work and training. An apprenticeship is a binding commitment between the employer and trainee for its duration.
- 2.Hold a current Driver’s Licence.
- 3.Build your workplace experience working on heavy machinery and engines.
