What's it like to be an Automotive Electrician?
Automotive Electricians are qualified to install new electrical parts or repair and maintain electrical wiring and components in motor vehicles. This may include electronic ignition, cruise control, automatic transmission and air conditioning.
Tasks and duties
- Isolating and diagnosing electrical faults or issues in computer-based equipment in vehicles.
- Repairing, testing and maintaining electrical parts and wiring.
- Dismantling and removing components as required.
- Discussing problems with vehicle owners.
How to become an Automotive Electrician
To become an Automotive Electrician you’re required to complete an apprenticeship and obtain a vocational qualification.
- 1.Consider completing a pre-vocational training, such as the Certificate II in Automotive Electrical Technology (AUR20412) should provide you with a sense if being an electrician is a career path you want to pursue further.
- 2.Find and apply for an electrical apprenticeship. An Apprenticeship Network provider or Group Training Organisation in your area can help you find a host employer and start your apprenticeship.
- 3.An apprenticeship is usually four years, and will include some structured training through a registered training organisation to complete a Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology (AUR30312).
