What's it like to be a Heavy Rigid Driver?
Heavy Rigid (HR) Truck Drivers are individuals who are licenced to drive vehicles with unlimited gross vehicle mass and tow trailers up to 9 tonnes without axle limitation. Heavy Rigid vehicles may include buses, trucks or articulated buses with more than two axles.
Tasks and duties
- Packing and stacking goods onto truck, restraining goods as required and safely transporting cargo such as equipment, products, supplies and people to and from specific locations.
- Manoeuvring vehicles into ideal loading and unloading positions, often within tight spaces.
- Undertaking basic truck inspections and maintenance, complying with rules and regulations, and ensuring all logbooks are up to date.
How to become a Heavy Rigid Driver
To work as a Heavy Rigid Truck Driver, you generally must already hold a Light Rigid (LR) or Medium Rigid (MR) licence.
- 1.Ensure you have held a LR or MR licence for at least a year. All truck licencing is managed at the state level and conducted in person, so investigate local truck driving schools.
- 2.Gain your HR licence by passing a theoretical test, practical driving skills test and eyesight test. Some states will also ask you to obtain a medical certificate.
- 3.HR Truck Drivers can further their careers by qualifying as Heavy Combination or Multi Combination Truck Drivers.
