What's it like to be a Heavy Combination Driver?
A Heavy Combination (HC) Truck Driver is an individual who handles and drives trucks or prime movers attached to a semi-trailer or heavy rigid vehicles towing a trailer. HC Truck Drivers may work in construction, agriculture or warehousing areas. Heavy Combination Truck Drivers may be responsible for hauling refuse, operating dump trucks or concrete pump trucks. HC trucks are the largest on-road trucks and can be more difficult to drive than lighter trucks. Many HC Truck Drivers work in shifts and drive interstate routes. This means that they may be on the road for days at a time.
Tasks and duties
- Loading goods onto truck, restraining goods as required and safely delivering items (such as concrete, palletised goods and supermarket products) to customers.
- Undertaking basic truck inspections and maintenance.
- Operating and manoeuvring the vehicle safely and maintain records (such as log books) as required.
How to become a Heavy Combination Driver
To gain your heavy vehicle licence, you will need to have a clean driving record. You’ll also need to pass formal training requirements, which depending on the state in which you live.
- 1.There are different pathways to gaining your HC licence, but the most common way is to obtain your MR or HR licence then wait one year before successfully completing your HC assessment with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). All truck licencing is managed at the state level and conducted in person, so investigate local truck driving schools.
- 2.Depending on where you live, you will usually be required to keep a log book with evidence of the accumulation of your HC driving skills, in addition to passing an eyesight test, passing a knowledge test, sitting a medical assessment report (if applicable), and paying any applicable fees.
