What's it like to be an Intake Worker?
Intake Workers work in the health or social services sectors, in settings such as hospitals, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres and mental health facilities. They take information from initial discussions with patients before recommending appropriate health services. Intake Workers work as part of multidisciplinary teams, often including general practitioners, allied health practitioners and local community workers, to provide holistic care for patients.
Tasks and duties
- Interviewing clients to establish what services may assist them.
- Assessing clients and recommending appropriate treatment or services.
- Connecting patients with various support services.
- Filling out client paperwork and documenting the results of assessments and screening.
- Conducting risk assessments including suicide and violence risk assessments, and developing action plans to mitigate these risks.
- Briefing internal services and outside agencies about client needs and requirements.
- Providing clients with follow up support.
- Answering phone calls and enquiries.
- Maintaining up-to-date client records.
How to become an Intake Worker
To become an Intake Worker you typically need to complete a bachelor degree in a relevant field, such as social work. Experience in a healthcare or customer service position is often required, as is a good understanding of patient privacy laws, health insurance procedures and policies, and medical software programs.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in social work, health administration, health sciences or a related discipline. Alternatively, a Diploma of Community Services (CHC52015) may provide you with foundational knowledge.
- 2.Gain work experience. Consider starting off with volunteer work to build your skills and networks.
