What's it like to be an Inventory Controller?
Inventory Controllers manage an organisation’s inventory levels by monitoring incoming and outgoing goods. They use software to plan and analyse purchases and delivery schedules, and coordinate stock counts.
Tasks and duties
- Receiving orders and checking against stock and inventory records.
- Coordinating stock counts.
- Monitoring supplier performance and analysing discrepancies.
- Communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Planning and forecasting ordering of inventory items such as stock, equipment and parts.
- Monitoring inventory levels and planning delivery schedules.
- Creating reports and analysing performance against key performance indicators.
- Investigating supplier options.
How to become an Inventory Controller
You don’t need any formal qualifications to work as an Inventory Controller, but a relevant qualification in logistics or supply chain management may give you an advantage. An equivalent level of work experience may be equally beneficial. Computer skills are required.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations (TLI30321). This usually takes around 6 months.
- 2.Gain experience in an entry level role in logistics, supply chain operations or a similar field.
- 3.Develop your skills and experience working with spreadsheets and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software.
- 4.Consider completing a Diploma of Logistics (TLI50219) or a bachelor degree majoring in logistics or supply chain management to broaden your career options.
