Medical Records Administrators manage and maintain all written and electronic medical records and reports. They organise and maintain patient records by collecting information such as test and exam results, diagnoses, recommended treatment plans and prior medical history. They have developed knowledge of medical terminology and clinical coding to assist in producing quality reports.
Tasks and duties
- Collecting admission reports, discharge reports and coding reports to maintain patient records.
- Liaising with medical staff from various departments regarding missing documents or clinical notes.
- Compiling documentation of conditions, treatments and medical charts.
- Responding to general enquiries and record requests from patients and physicians.
- Assisting with internal and external audits.
- Creating a database and organising records in a logical method.
- Managing the security of patient files and computer databases.
- Complying with policies that protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
How to become a Medical Records Administrator
It is possible to work as a Medical Records Administrator without formal qualifications, however many employers prefer individuals to have qualifications in the field of Health Administration.
- 1.Complete a qualification in Health Administration. This could be a Certificate III in Health Administration (HLT37315) or a Certificate IV in Health Administration (HLT47315). Each qualification can take 6-18 months to complete.
- 2.Complete supervised workplace training.
- 3.Consider exploring further career opportunities in the field by undertaking further study, such as a diploma or bachelor degree in practice management or health information management.
