Tasks and duties
- Conducting sub-surface surveys to identify the characteristics of potential mining development sites.
- Investigating mineral deposits and working with geologists and economists to evaluate whether they can be mined profitably.
- Looking at the depth and characteristics of the mineral deposit to work out the most suitable mining method.
- Designing the layout of a mine.
- Designing mining and mineral treatment equipment and machinery.
- Planning and coordinating the employment of mining staff.
- Designing, implementing and coordinating mine safety programs.
- Collaborating with geologists and other engineers about infrastructure such as access roads, water and power supplies.
- Returning mine sites to their natural states when mining operations have concluded.
How to become a Mining Engineer
The common pathway to becoming a Mining Engineer usually takes 6-7 years of combined education and on-the-job experience.
- 1.Undertake a Bachelor of Engineering degree, majoring in mining or geotechnical engineering. As part of your degree, you may complete years 3 and 4 at Mining Education Australia (MEA), a collaborative venture with the University of NSW Sydney, University of Adelaide, University of Queensland and Curtin University.
- 2.Apply for a job as a Graduate Mining Engineer. You will usually spend 2-3 years as a Graduate before becoming a Professional Mining Engineer.
