How to become a Portfolio Manager

SEEK Learning
To become a Portfolio Manager, you must have a high level of education and professional accreditation, as well as appropriate levels of investment management experience.

  1. Complete a bachelor degree in finance, accounting, commerce, economics or business. Selecting subjects that focus on investing, such as risk management, asset management or statistics can give you a solid background in portfolio management.
  2. Consider completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a masters degree in finance. Portfolio Manager roles can be competitive, so many employers prefer candidates who have a masters degree.
  3. Complete a financial internship. While you're studying, you could seek out internships or work experience at investment firms. Gaining experience is a crucial step in starting a career as a Portfolio Manager.
  4. Gain an entry-level position in finance, such as a Financial Analyst position.
  5. Consider gaining certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder. This certification is an effective way to demonstrate your commitment to becoming a Portfolio Manager.
