What's it like to be a Quality Assurance Officer?
Quality Assurance Officers typically work in food processing plants and assess the quality of food products being prepared for sale. This can involve weighing foods, performing hygiene checks and keeping records of assessments. In manufacturing plants, Quality Assurance Officers check equipment to make sure it is calibrated and operating correctly, inspect storage areas to make sure conditions will maintain the quality of the materials and products, and oversee different steps in the manufacturing process. Quality Assurance Officers use computers, laboratory equipment and specialised instruments in their work.
Tasks and duties
- Studying product specifications.
- Sampling products to determine whether they meet specifications and quality standards, and initiating corrective action if necessary.
- Analysing quality assurance data and making recommendations for improvement.
- Training and assisting operators to carry out their quality control function.
- Checking details of assemblies to ensure specialist equipment is correctly calibrated and functioning properly.
- Maintaining records of quality assurance checks.
- Reviewing, updating and developing product specifications and product information forms.
- Monitoring all critical and quality control points within the production lines for all products being manufactured.
- Liaising with production and warehousing staff to ensure quality issues are addressed and preventative actions are followed.
How to become a Quality Assurance Officer
While not essential, a relevant qualification can improve your chances of becoming a Quality Assurance Officer. Computer skills and experience in food science or manufacturing are also beneficial.
- 1.Consider completing a relevant tertiary degree. This could be a Certificate IV in Food Science and Technology (FBP40421), Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Food Technology and Nutrition).
- 2.Gain experience working in quality assurance. Experience with Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems, ISO standards, production lines, food safety and manufacturing processes can be beneficial, depending on the specific role you’re pursuing.
