What's it like to be a Quantity Surveyor?
Quantity Surveyors work with construction professionals including Architects, Engineers and Builders to prepare cost estimates and plans, audit projects, and manage costs and contracts for construction projects.
Tasks and duties
- Liaising with other construction professionals to deliver projects.
- Examining structural drawings and specifications.
- Reviewing changes to construction plans and assessing costs.
- Producing financial forecasts for clients.
- Performing feasibility assessments to help guide project decisions.
How to become a Quantity Surveyor
To work as a Quantity Surveyor in Australia, you are generally required to have graduate qualifications in quantity surveying or construction management.
- 1.Complete a tertiary qualification such as the Bachelor of Construction Management or Bachelor of Construction Project Management. A number of courses are accredited by the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors.
- 2.Explore cadetship opportunities. Some organisations offer cadetships for students completing relevant industry degrees
- 3.It’s important to check whether there are any licensing requirements to work as Quantity Surveyor in your state. For example, in Victoria, Quantity Surveyors are required to be registered with the Victorian Building Authority
