What's it like to be a Refrigeration Mechanic?
Refrigeration Mechanics (also called Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics) work with industrial, commercial and domestic refrigeration, air-conditioning and heating systems. They are specialists in installing, testing, servicing and repairing these systems.
Tasks and duties
- Installing and repairing the components of cooling and refrigeration systems, including compressors, motors, condensers, and evaporators.
- Assess and replace copper lines for steam, gas, refrigerant, compressed air, oil and chilled water.
- Conduct operational tests on refrigeration systems, checking mechanisms and making adjustments.
How to become a Refrigeration Mechanic
To become a Refrigeration Mechanic you need to complete an apprenticeship and some formal training. You also need to fulfill certain licensing requirement in order to become certified.
- 1.When looking to start an apprenticeship, an Apprenticeship Network provider or Group Training Organisation in your area can help you find a host employer.
- 2.While completing your apprenticeship, you also need to complete a formal training component in order to become fully qualified. As part of a Certificate III in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration (UEE32211) you’ll complete practical and theoretical classes to gain the skills and knowledge to work at a trade level in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry.
- 3.A Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) must be held by any person who carries out work in relation to refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment. You apply through the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) website. If you’re required to carry out work that involves disconnecting and reconnecting low-voltage electrical installations you will also require additional licensing. These vary from state to state, so check the requirements of the state you plan on working in.
