Researchers seek information in various capacities, working across a wide range of industries. Researchers use various methodologies to conduct their research, including collating sources such as internet searchers, newspapers, journals and other publications. They often work as specialists in market research, medical research, scientific research or in public policy.
Tasks and duties
- Working independently in accordance to client requirements, or under the supervision of a research team leader.
- Analysing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data.
- Conducting research experiments.
- Sourcing information from texts.
- Preparing research reports and papers.
- Managing projects from beginning to end.
- Working with internal and external stakeholders.
- Working to set budgets.
- Constantly reviewing drafts and changing direction when required.
- Recording notes and filing research according to best practice methods.

How to become a Researcher
- Complete an undergraduate degree in a relevant field. This could be a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts, or a degree related to your chosen field of research such as psychology, sociology, economics or health science.
- Gain research experience in your industry in a role such as Research Assistant.
- Consider undertaking postgraduate studies, depending on your chosen field of research. Some hirers may prefer candidates with a PhD in their area of expertise.
