What's it like to be a Stylist?
A Stylist tells a story visually. They work with individuals and brands to understand what they want to convey, and then curate an image as part of a wardrobe refresh, an editorial photoshoot or a creative installation.
Tasks and duties
- Meet with clients to understand brief.
- Source props, clothes and products.
- Prepare and steam garments ahead of photoshoots.
- Prepare props and products ahead of installation.
- Provide indicative costings and work to client budget.
- Create looks and concepts and gain approval.
- Build and maintain relationships with customers, suppliers and vendors.
How to become a Stylist
You don’t need formal qualifications to become a Stylist, but a course may help you get your foot in the door and make industry contacts.
- 1.Look for opportunities to work as an Intern or Junior Stylist and gain experience on the job, under the guidance of senior team members.
- 2.Complete a Certificate II in Applied Fashion Design and Technology (MST20616) to gain an introduction to this creative career.
- 3.Level up with a Diploma of Fashion Styling (10064NAT). It will take you 1 year to complete full-time, and while there are no minimum entry requirements you may need to submit an assessment task when you apply.
