What's it like to be a Technical Consultant?
Technical Consultants work with organisations to improve their use of technology and achieve business goals. They are experts in technical fields such as Computer Science and are hired by organisations to provide advice, solve organisational problems and drive increased efficiency.
Tasks and duties
- Liaising with clients and stakeholders to determine project requirements.
- Determining project parameters, timelines and deliverables.
- Building and maintaining an expert knowledge of technology solutions.
- Designing and testing a range of software and technical solutions.
- Driving the rapid adoption of new technologies, ideas and processes.
- Creating user and training documentation and overseeing training sessions.
- Using data modelling and analysis to inform and illustrate solutions.
- Developing functional specifications for developers to implement.
- Creating testing and deployment processes and plans, and overseeing deployments.
- Being first point of contact and providing guidance and advice for the duration of a project.
How to become a Technical Consultant
While it’s possible to work as a Technical Consultant without formal qualifications, a relevant degree is recommended and often required.
- 1.Complete a relevant bachelor degree, such as a Bachelor of Computer Science or Bachelor of Information Technology. This usually takes three years of full-time study.
- 2.Gain industry experience. You could undertake an internship while studying to work alongside experienced IT professionals.
- 3.Consider advancing your skills with a postgraduate degree, such as a Master of Information Technology. You could also seek an IT certification through an industry body such as the Australian Computer Society (ACS).
